How do I register for Self Assessment if I am not self employed?

If you are not self employed but have other sources of income such as pension, dividends and property income, then you will need to register for self assessment. This can be done here

How do I set up a business partnership for Self Assessment?

If you are the nominated partner, you can register a partnership online here

How do I register as a partner for Self Assessment?

Only the nominated partner can register as a partner online and this can be started here

How do I pay my Self Assessment tax bill?

There are a number of ways to pay your Self Assessment tax bill. One of the most common methods is to sign in using Government Gateway and follow the steps provided here

VAT

When do I need to register for VAT?

HMRC have set criteria for when a business must register for VAT and these details can be found here

While it is mandatory for some businesses to register for VAT, others may find that voluntary registration is beneficial. Each business has unique circumstances and should assess whether VAT registration would be advantageous.

How do I de-register from VAT?

How do I register as a contractor?

Registering for the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is essential if you employ subcontractors for construction work. CIS, which operates under the PAYE system, requires contractors to register with HMRC.

How do I register as a sub-contractor?

If you are employed by a contractor, you are required to register for the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) as a subcontractor. You can register here

Under CIS, contractors are obligated to deduct 20% from your payments and remit it to HMRC. Failure to register for CIS will result in a 30% deduction from your payments by
the contractor.
